Tips For Using A CPAP Machine

Will you be getting a CPAP machine to help with your sleep apnea issues? Then you'll definitely want to know the following tips so that you know how to use it.

Know How To Fit Your Face Mask

One important part of using a CPAP machine will be to get the mask to fit well on your face. There are two straps attached to the mask that need to be placed in the right positions. The upper strap goes around the top of your head but rests above the ears. You'll notice that the straps go upwards rather than even with the connection points on the mask. The lower strap goes around the back of your head but is level with the connection points. These straps should attach with a magnet to hold them in place and allow them to easily come off in case of an emergency.

The straps can be tightened with a velcro strap, which helps prevent there being any buckles resting against your head at night. If the mask is loose, you will disconnect the strap, pull it tight, and reattach the velcro onto the strap itself. It should form a seal around your face that is not too tight.

Use Distilled Water

The CPAP machine will require water in order to provide humidity to the air that you are breathing. It's important that you are only using distilled water in your CPAP machine. This is due to distilled water not having any harmful bacteria in it, so it is the best way to ensure that the air you are breathing is clean. If you use regular tap water, you could unknowingly contaminate the air.

Keep The CPAP Machine Clean

You'll need to regularly clean your CPAP machine to ensure that bacteria is not growing inside it. Even though you're using distilled water, bacteria can still grow due to the moisture content inside it. You should even take the hose that connects to the mask and let it dry in a position where the moisture content can drain out of it. For example, you can place it in your shower, hanging it over a curtain rod of the shower head.

It's crucial that you follow the instructions provided by the manufacturer for cleaning the CPAP machine. That's because certain cleaning solutions can cause a buildup of residue on the inside of the machine, which is not good for the air that you are breathing from it.
