How To Travel Hassle-Free With A CPAP Machine

Most CPAP owners are apprehensive of traveling with their CPAP machine. Flying with one will severely test your patience if your documentation is not in order.  But CPAP machines have become smaller and easier to carry. However, a CPAP machine might raise a suspicious eye from airport attendants who are not familiar with them. Fortunately, options like TravelPAP machines are now legally recognized as medical devices. Your CPAP does not count as luggage. Here are a few tips on how to have less hassle when traveling with your CPAP machine.

What to Do Before Traveling

Do the following before traveling:

  1. Get your CPAP prescription. It will help identify the machine as a medical device. Pack it alongside the machine.
  2. Ensure you have all the accessories for your CPAP machine. If you have an older machine, make sure that you buy a universal power adapter for international travel. It is prudent to carry a backup battery as well.
  3. Check the airline's assisted device policy. Many airlines are supportive and will grant your request for a seat with power sockets. Carry a 12-foot extension cord to be on the safe side in case you don't have a seat with power sockets.
  4. Read and understand the documentation on safety regulations by different agencies. This includes the FAA compliance letter and the TSA's security policy, as well as the airline's policy on carry-ons.
  5. Remember to empty the humidifier before packing it to avoid liquid damage.
  6. Pack your bed pillow. Hotel pillows are not very helpful for people with sleep apnea.

What to Do When Checking In

CPAP machines are required to go through an X-ray scanner. It will be quicker if you tell the security staff that you have the machine. The security may swab the device to check for explosives. Have the mask and tubing in your carry-on case.

Alert the cabin crew if you need to use the CPAP machine while in flight. They will be happy to provide you with water for the humidifier.

What to Do When Traveling by Other Means

There will be fewer security hassles if you are traveling by bus, boat, or train. You are not guaranteed of finding power sockets, so always carry a battery pack. It is always good to enquire about a carrier's policy about boarding with and using medical aids.

Traveling with a CPAP machine should not be a hassle if you make adequate preparations. The process becomes smoother after the first time. Do not leave your CPAP machine behind in fear of inconvenience. You need to sleep well at your destination.
